It's the summer of 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia. Four middle-aged black women, co-workers from a local doll factory, travel by city bus to a "white’s only" eating establishment inside a downtown Atlanta department store. Their purpose is to "test" their newly acquired civil rights handed down by the Supreme Court outlawing segregation in eating establishments. This funny, touching play received the Kennedy Center Roger L. Stevens Award for New Playwrights and the Adrienne Kennedy Award for Most Promising Young Dramatist.
The cast, under the direction of Reynelda Snell includes, Kenya Pollard, Teresa Champion, Karen Roberts-Grissom, Beki Pineda, Timothy Johnson and Lisa Young.
S.M. Shephard-Massat fact-inspired play had its world premiere in January 2000 by the Denver Center Theatre Company, in a staging directed by Israel Hicks. The drama was billed as a tribute to the ordinary people whose tiny acts helped bring about the U.S. civil rights movement. The production was her professional debut. S.M. Shephard–Massat won the 2001 M. Elizabeth Osborn Award, from the American Theatre Critics Association the annual award, for an emerging playwright. The play is based on a page out of her grandmother's life.
