Prénom Carmen
Prénom Carmen, a modern reworking of the Prosper Mérimée narrative (preserving the broad themes of the Bizet opera), revives Godard's youthful "new wave" wit--although middle-aged overtones of despair are palpable. The opera's cigarette girl becomes a terrorist, Carmen X (Maruschka Detmers). Paying a visit to her uncle Jean (Godard), a burned-out film director languishing in an asylum, Carmen argues that she and her lover will use his apartment to make a documentary but, in fact, her intent is to put it to use in a kidnapping plot. Celebrated new-wave cinematographer Raoul Coutard, whose cinéma vérité images for Breathless captured the world's imagination, was reunited with Godard for Prénom Carmen (1984, 95 minutes). Recommended for mature audiences only.
