In recognition of their service to our country, military veterans wearing their unit jackets, hats, or showing proper identification at the ticket desk will receive complimentary admission to the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda from November 9 to 15, 2009.

American veterans will be honored during a public ceremony on the historic aircraft carrier on Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, November 11, beginning at 11 a.m.
The guest speaker will be Randall J. Ramian, Chief Executive Officer of the USS Hornet Museum. A commander, Supply Corps, in the Naval Reserve, Ramian has held numerous leadership positions in the U.S. Navy including commanding and executive officer. He was recalled to active duty in 2004 – 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and served as deputy commander/chief of staff of a transportation group at a major Kuwaiti port with distribution responsibilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE and Djibouti.

Music will be provided by the USS Hornet Band. The Color Guard will be provided by Boy Scouts Troop 152 and Adventure Scouts Unit 152 from Oakley who are led by a former crew member of the USS Hornet.

Admission is $6-$14 for the general public, and there is ample free parking across from the pier.

The aircraft carrier USS Hornet is the Bay Area’s largest veteran. Permanent exhibits feature over 15 Navy and Marines aircraft and helicopters from various eras including a TBM Avenger from WWII, an F-14 Tomcat from Desert Storm, and an F-4 Phantom from Vietnam.

Ship compartments open for public touring include Combat Information Center, Captain’s Bridge, Flight Deck Control, Hangar Deck, Pilot Ready Rooms, Ship’s Hospital, Torpedo Shop, Officers’ Quarters, and the newly open Post Office.

The USS Hornet Museum is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to inspiring people of all ages to experience naval history, science, and space technology first-hand. A registered State and National Historic Landmark, the historic aircraft carrier is located at 707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3 at the former Naval Air Station in Alameda.
