VISUALS: Prominent speakers from across the nation address a wide variety of issues affecting
women.

DENTON (UNT), Texas ? The host of the TV documentary series ?Explorer? will be the featured speaker
at the University of North Texas? 7th annual Women of Color conference on March 30 (Thursday). The
focus of this year?s conference is ?Women?s Global Health Issues.? The conference includes breakout
sessions and a networking lunch.
Lisa Ling will deliver the morning and afternoon keynote addresses. At 9 a.m. Ling will address the
conference theme, ?Women?s Global Health Issues.? In the afternoon, from 3 to 4:15 p.m., Ling?s topic will
be ?Abandonment of Chinese Baby Girls and Their Eventual Adoption by American Parents.?
The purpose of UNT's Women of Color Conference is to bring persons of diverse backgrounds together to
discuss timely women?s issues and to create bonds based on the commonalities of these issues. This
conference has become quite popular. Women and men of diverse backgrounds spend the day in a relaxed
atmosphere learning more about important societal issues.
Conference attendees include university, community college and high school students, family members,
staff, faculty and administrators. In addition, community and business leaders attend.
Ling was one of the youngest reporters for Channel One News, a network seen in middle and high schools
across the country. By the age of 25, Ling was Channel One?s senior war correspondent, reporting from
Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia, Algeria, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, India and Iran.

Ling became the first female host of the series ?Explorer? since it premiered on the National Geographic
Channel two decades ago. She also serves as a special contributor for ?The Oprah Winfrey Show.? Prior to
her position with ?Explorer,? Ling was a co-host of the daytime talk show, ?The View.?
Ling?s hard-work continues off-camera. She serves as a contributing editor for USA Weekend, and has
produced eight documentaries for PBS, several of which won awards.
Early registration for the conference ends Feb. 28 (Tuesday). The conference is sponsored by the UNT?s
Division of Equity and Diversity, Multicultural Center and Women?s Center, with support from American
Airlines and North Texas Hospital.
