Created by New York composer Phil Kline, UNSILENT NIGHT is an electronic caroling party for an infinite number of boomboxes. At once peaceful, electric, dreamy, and communal, this is a chance to be part of a greater stereo system and celebrate the holiday spirit.

Different parts of the composition will be distributed on cassettes and CDs. At the given signal, participants will simultaneously press PLAY. When the tapes start rolling, “they blossom into a marvelously crafted symphony” (Time Out New York). Then the crowd will walk a
predetermined route within the park, reaching a beautiful climax, making full use of the park’s diverse landscape. UNSILENT NIGHT will reverberate off the trees and hills, accompanied at times by the din of distant traffic, resulting in a drifting cloud of ethereal undulating sound.

Participants will meet at the basketball courts next to the parking lot at 6:45 p.m. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. The piece is approximately 40 minutes long.

The more boomboxes there are, the more “voices” in the piece. If you would like to participate and have a portable boombox, please send an e-mail to [email protected], indicating if you need a CD or cassette tape of the song. There may be a downloadable Mp3 version available
for those with Mp3 players with speakers. Send an e-mail and you will be updated on the availability of the Mp3. All music is distributed for free.

If you do not have a boombox, you are still an important part of the procession, because the more people who attend, the more amazing and memorable this event will be. UNSILENT NIGHT is kid-friendly, so the whole family can enjoy the magic.

UNSILENT NIGHT Los Angeles will also be accepting a voluntary donation of $1 to be donated to A Window Between Worlds, a small non-profit group based in Venice, CA, that uses artistic expression to help heal victims of domestic violence.

Help make a BIG (and joyful) noise, and be part of the very first UNSILENT NIGHT Los Angeles, sure to become an annual holiday tradition!

Since its debut in 1992, UNSILENT NIGHT has become a cult holiday tradition in New York City and around the world, drawing crowds of up to 1,000 participants. In addition to New York, UNSILENT NIGHT is also performed in San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Cleveland, Tallahassee, Vancouver, Tuscon, Yukon Territory, Berlin, Middlesbrough, England, and Sydney, Australia. New this year are Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Baltimore, Charleston, Milledgeville, GA, Rochester, NY, Banff, Alberta, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

This is a free event, and will be held rain or shine. For more information, contact Behnoosh Khalili at [email protected].
