Boston's Museum of Fine Arts is home to one of the finest and largest collections of Japanese art outside of Japan. This exhibition highlights for the first time the Museum's holdings of ukiyo-e paintings--one of the most important in the world. Featured will be more than 60 works by the major artists active in the Edo region from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries. The show will explore several themes, such as the creation of the iconography of courtesan and actor imagery, as well as provide an unparalleled overview of the development of the ukiyo-e painting genre.
