U.S. ? Libyan Relations

Since 1988 and the bombing of PanAm flight 103 over Lockerbie, the Socialist People?s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya had been cut off from the majority of the global community and was sanctioned by the United Nations. However, in 2003, Libya took formal responsibility for the bombing of the PanAm flight and has made great public efforts, including announcing its intent to halt its weapons program, to restore its place in world affairs. As such, the United Nations has lifted its sanctions and the United States has begun the process of restoring relations with the once enemy nation. Today, the United States has a representative located in Tripoli and Tripoli has a representative in Washington, D.C. Libya has had the honor of hosting such guests as President Chirac of France, who made the first visit on behalf of France since Libya?s independence in 1951, and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. While these actions are positive, one must wonder where the relationship is headed and the road that will be taken given the years of animosity. There is still work to be done in repairing the relationship and the next few years will be a test of the strides that have already been made. Join us as Ambassador Aujali discusses U.S. ? Libyan relations of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
