Twelve Cents for Marvin was formed by a group of Colorado State University students in Ft. Collins, CO, in late 1996 and early 1997. According to the liner notes of their debut album, the band got its unusual name when they went to Denver to see a concert and it was canceled. Walking around Denver, they came upon a vagrant named Marvin, who insisted they give him 12 cents.
