Triple Feature: XANADU, 1980, Universal, 93 min. Dir. Robert Greenwald. Grafting 1940s-style movie whimsy onto late-’70s Muzak to spawn a whole new hybrid - discokitsch - XANADU stars Olivia Newton-John as a muse sent to Earth to inspire directionless artist Michael Beck to open a roller-disco nightclub funded by aging, lonely moneybags Gene Kelly. With must-be-seen-to-be-believed roller skating sequences, animation by Don Bluth (AN AMERICAN TAIL), and a killer soundtrack featuring the No.1 hit "Magic," XANADU, a flop on its release, has morphed into such a beloved cult fave that it inspired a Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical.

ROLLER BOOGIE, 1979, Park Circus/MGM, 103 min. Rich girl Terri (Linda Blair) runs away from home to pal around with fun-loving roller skaters on the Venice boardwalk. When the local rink is threatened by a nefarious developer, the kids have to band together to stop him from turning their pleasure palace into a shopping mall. Mark L. Lester, who later solidified his audience-pleasing credentials with COMMANDO and FIRESTARTER, directed this rousing piece of pop entertainment.

SKATETOWN, U.S.A., 1979, Columbia, 98 min. Dir. William A. Levey. A competition at a roller rink is the setting for this 1970s time capsule with an amazing pop culture pedigree: Co-written by regular John Carpenter collaborator and THE LAST STARFIGHTER director Nick Castle, the movie stars Scott Baio, Patrick Swayze in his first big role (as evil womanizing skater Ace), Ron “Horseshack” Palillo from WELCOME BACK KOTTER, Flip Wilson, theUnknown Comic and doomed Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten. And did we forget to mention Billy Barty and THE BRADY BUNCH beauty Maureen McCormick? Wall-to-wall roller skating and disco-era kitsch make this a must-see cult classic.
