Primarily caught by accident, skates, similar to Rays, are generally regarded as a nuisance to commercial fishermen. However, with population declines, skates have received increased conservation attention in recent years. Join Dr. Mandelman for a discussion on the biological profiles of these animals, their importance ecologically, and how they cope with the rigors of fishing capture.

BOSTON — The New England Aquarium will host a series of educational lectures and films delivered by well respected colleagues, scientists, professors and biologists from various aquatic fields. Topics of discussion will include coral reef extinction, ecosystems, marine mammal life and more. The New England Aquarium is a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation. The Aquarium Lecture Series is presented free to the public through the generosity of the Lowell Institute. Programs will begin at 7 p.m. in the Harborside Learning Lab, located at the New England Aquarium, Central Wharf, Boston, unless otherwise noted.
