Art inevitably bears the marks of the time in which it was made. In the past year we have witnessed the fall of dictatorships and governments around the world, seen the ebb and flow of wars, and experienced the collapse of weakened economies as others struggle to regain some semblance of balance. From Cairo to Oakland, people have voiced their frustrations with those in power through the means of public protests and sit-ins. While the world is essentially in a state of continuous transformation, the rate and violence of these transitions varies. The accelerated turmoil and uncertainty in the current social and political spheres is seeping into the language of expression, just at the moment in which photography itself is undergoing dramatic evolution from analog to digital. The photographs in this juried members' exhibition bear subtle traces of the uncertain and often tumultuous climate in which they were made.
