To the Moon: the American Space Program in the 1960s November 7, 2008

In 1958, while Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader, he was instrumental in the passage of the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which led to the subsequent creation of NASA. Three years later, President John F. Kennedy made Vice President Johnson head of the National Aeronautics and Space Council, with the responsibility of looking into the feasibility of landing an American on the moon within the decade. This exhibit celebrates the historic achievement and Lyndon Johnson's significant role. It will open on President Johnson's Centennial birthday, and close on the 40th anniversity of the famed moon landing. The exhibit also falls on the 50th anniversary of NASA.
