Since its formation in 1997, Tin Hat Trio has often expanded its trio format by inviting other musicians to join them. All of their four CDs feature guests, among them such luminaries as Tom Waits, John Medeski, and Willie Nelson. When founding member Rob Burger, the trio’s accordionist and pianist, left the trio in late 2004, remaining members Mark Orton and Carla Kihlstedt decided to expand the group and rename it simply Tin Hat. They invited famed clarinetist Ben Goldberg and multi-instrumentalist Ara Anderson to become members of the new band. While the format is different, the creativity and originality of their music is as strong as ever. Their new album The Sad Machinery Of Spring, their first as Tin Hat, will be released on the Rykodisc label in early '07. They will come to Helsinki armed with new songs from that album as well as old favorites.
