Thursday Afternoon Film Series August 30, 2007

Family films are the theme of the Williamsburg Regional Librarys Thursday Afternoon Film Series in August. Bring the children and grandchildren to see five classic, family-friendly flicks in the air-conditioned comfort of the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. August 2 Jason and the Argonauts (1963, rated G)
This entertaining movie, based on Greek mythology, recounts the many adventures of Jason. To reclaim his stolen kingdom, Jason must journey to the far ends of the world and capture the Golden Fleece. Along the way he encounters a marvelous collection of creatures brought to life by special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen.

August 9 The Wizard of Oz (1939, rated G)
Dorothy, her companions and Toto, too, follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City in search of assistance from the wonderful wizard of Oz. This outstanding movie is ranked number 10 on the American Film Institutes list of Greatest Movies of All Time. Victor Fleming directed and Judy Garland stars along with Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger and Margaret Hamilton.

August 16 Treasure Island (1934, unrated)
A dissolute old sailor named Billy Bones (Lionel Barrymore) dies in a tavern leaving his treasure map to young Jim Hawkins (Jackie Cooper). While searching for the treasure Hawkins encounters many dangerous pirates including the treacherous, peg-legged, Long John Silver (Wallace Beery). This grand adventure from Hollywoods golden era was
directed by Victor Fleming.
August 23 Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948, unrated)
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play a couple of bumbling baggage clerks who run afoul of monsters in this fun spooky comedy. The ditsy duo contend with Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolf Man when they deliver two large mysterious crates to MacDougals House of Horrors.

August 30 My Friend Flicka (1943, unrated)
A young boy befriends a feral colt named Flicka and is determined to keep her despite his disaproving fathers misgivings. This heartwarming tearjerker was beautifully filmed in Wyoming by director Harold D. Schuster and stars Roddy McDowall and Preston Foster.
