Threads of Time: A Gift of Japanese Textiles from Terry Welch is an exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. The ten textiles on view were chosen to suggest the rich diversity of fibers, dyes, and designs in the Welch donation. Basho-fu, a banana-fiber cloth unique to Okinawa, and Tsushima asa, woven from hemp native to a small island between Japan and Korea, make light and airy kimonos for hot climates, while a jacket from northern Japan is quilted from layers of indigo-dyed cotton. Each textile, in its own way, weaves a tale about life in traditional Japan, from horticulture and economics to cherished conventions and cultural aspirations.
