This exhibition looks at independently produced artists' publications as a model of collaborative activity as well as an alternative exhibition space. The collective spirit of three noteworthy zines is profiled here: K48, based in Brooklyn, New York; Werewolf Express, based in Los Angeles; and Hot & Cold, based in Oakland.

Selected art works and new commissions by the editors and contributors of each zine will cover the gallery walls, turning the exhibition space into a three dimensional zine experience. Also featured is a collection of zines dating from the 1980s to the 1990s from the archives of noteworthy gay fiction writer and zine publisher Dennis Cooper.

This exhibition explores YBCA's Big Ideas as part of its Future Shock series, showcasing experimental artistic vision and contemporary life.

Also featuring "The Zine Café" Local poets and artists Amanda Eicher, Robert Arnold and David Benzler will be leading zine-making workshops through "The Zine Café" on select Thursdays and Saturdays. The workshops feature local guest lecturers, musicians, poets, and artists swapping skills, artwork and ideas. Visit www.YBCA.org for workshop details.

Release of issue 4:: Hot and Cold will also be
releasing a limited edition of 500, hand assembled catalogs for The Zine Unbound exhibit. this comes equipped with essays by curator Berin Golonu, chris and griffin/ hot and cold, andrew scott of needles and pens, scott hug of K-48 and Trinie Dalton, a dvd by Rebecca Miller, buttons, and prints by Mat Obrien, Matt Greene and Nonconceptual..
