In honor of Veterans Day and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United States involvement in the Vietnam War, Lakewood Cultural Center presents American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life® stage presentation of “The Things They Carried” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 in the intimate 316-seat theater at 470 S. Allison Parkway at Wadsworth Boulevard and West Alameda Avenue.

In this masterwork of contemporary literature, a single actor leads the audience through five of Tim O’Brien’s unforgettable short stories exploring the complexities of battle, including “The Rainy River” and “The Man I Killed.” The blurred lines between truth and reality, fact and fiction, make his journey unforgettable.

Adapted for the stage in 2004, this Literature to Life® original features 60 minutes of verbatim performance from this unique and important piece of American literature. A master teaching artist leads a brief preshow introduction and a 15-minute interactive postshow discussion in which the audience will explore themes including ethics, making choices and violence. Denver-area double bassist Mark Diamond will provide live musical accompaniment to the performance.
