The Theater Offensive, New England's leading creator and presenter of Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT), will present the World Premiere musical SURVIVING THE NIAN April 14 - May 5 at the Roberts Theatre at the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at Boston Center for the Arts, 527 Tremont Street, Boston’s South End. (Press Night is Wednesday April 18 2007). Music and Lyrics by Melissa Li and book by Abe Rybeck and Melissa Li, SURVIVING THE NIAN has been developed over the past four years through The Theater Offensive's Plays at Work program and Rybeck and Li recently received the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation award in recognition of their collaboration on the new musical.

Fireworks explode when Kaylin returns to Hong Kong for the first time in five years, bringing her lover Asha - and a completely new life plan - to introduce to her family. But they have plans of their own for her. Where do her loyalties lie? This groundbreaking show will remind you that families in even the most far-away lands are, well, familiar.

Directed by Patrick Wang and with Musical Direction by Juri Panda Jones, the cast features Megumi Haggerty (Kaylin Wu), Mariko Kanto (Jessie), Gary Ng (Uncle Tony), Abria Smith (Asha), Hyunsoo Moon (Vincent) and Judy Tan (Mrs. Wu). The creative design team features Erik D. Diaz (Scenic Designer), Nathaniel Packard (Lighting Designer), Amanda Mujica (Costumes), Michael Dalby (Sound Designer) and Paula Kelly (Hair and Makeup).
