The Small Ponds, a collaboration between Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown, Tres Chicas) and Matt Douglas (The Proclivities) played their first show nearly one year ago. They’re now in the perfect position to strike out on the road, having won the collective heart of their hometown, Raleigh, N.C. (in ’10, they were invited to play the grand opening of the new downtown amphitheatre, and to headline two of the city’s hippest arts events—all within the month of June!), and hovering on the verge of a national release of their debut EP in September.
Fans of Caitlin Cary will find her once again reinvented, and playing a starring role alongside Matt Douglas, as they forge a completely new duet paradigm. Douglas, an accomplished jazz woodwind player and a Fulbright scholar focused on the intersection of traditional Eastern European folk and modernism, takes up the guitar and joins with Cary, a seminal voice in the alt.country/Americana tradition, to bring forth a fetching, forthright, and endearing new sound.
This is a man and a woman singing together, writing together—trusting each other’s ideas and mostly each other’s voices—rendering a complicated, double-sided musical mirror through which lots of boys and lots of girls might gaze and find something a wee bit pretty, a wee bit scary, and a wee bit true about themselves.
The Small Ponds E.P. is now available in limited edition and will be released in the U.S. on Last Chance Records in September. The band will tour in support of the release throughout the summer and fall.
