The Salford Lectures: Globalisation and Security: Challenges for the Coming Decade November 8, 2012

Dr Azeem Ibrahim

Still only in his mid thirties, Azeem Ibrahim has packed a huge amount into his life. Glasgow-born, Azeem has been described by his peers as a brilliant young scholar and businessman, and last of the true remaining polymaths.

In 2007 he was the youngest person on Carter Anderson’s UK Power 100 List, which described him as one of the most influential and highest-achieving people in Britain. He has won many awards and honours. In 2010 Azeem was named as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers by the LSDP European Social Think Tank and a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Dr Ibrahim completed his PhD from the University of Cambridge and served as an International Security Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and a World Fellow at Yale. Most recently he was appointed an Adjunct Research Professor at the Strategic Studies Institute, US Army War College and a Lecturer at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Earlier this year he founded Scotland’s first progressive think tank, The Scotland Institute.

Azeem Ibrahim advises global leaders and has provided advice to Imran Khan, Gordon Brown and Anwar Ibrahim. He speaks regularly across the world and contributes to many journals, newspapers and on-line forums.

After spending several years as a reservist in the Parachute Regiment, Azeem launched his own IT consultancy, expanding into continental Europe and later moving into global finance. He has founded more than a dozen companies. Today he devotes much of his time to his non-profit interests, which have included the establishment of several charities and the launch of the first think tank in Scotland dedicated to providing education in authentic Islamic teachings, which can help to reduce the appeal of extremist narratives.

Dr Ibrahim’s lecture marks the launch of two new master’s programmes at the University of Salford which have been awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor's Foresight Award. The programmes entitled Distance Learning Master’s of Arts in International Relations and Globalisation, and Distance Learning Master’s of Arts in Terrorism and Security, are currently successful Attendance programmes run through the Politics and Contemporary History Directorate.

These alternative modes of delivery will appeal to the local and international mid-career, as well as traditional student, who is passionate about studying the contemporary world of security and international relations. To mark this occasion, Dr Ibrahim’s lecture will address vital issues facing the world today in building the global economy and inter-connectedness of people, whilst also facing up to the realities and challenges of security for everyone.

This promises to be a thought-provoking and valuable lecture covering themes that concern us all. We are pleased to welcome Dr Ibrahim to the University of Salford and invite you to join the audience where you will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A at the end of his presentation.

Practical Details

The lecture will take place on Thursday 8 November 2012, in The Chapman Building, Peel Park Campus, commencing at 17.30. Refreshments will be served prior to the lecture from 17.00 and there will be a reception for all guests following the lecture.
