Professor Chakrabarty will discuss how the politics of identity and recognition in democracies impinge on the production of knowledge about the past. Dipesh Chakrabarty is the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor in History, South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, and a Faculty Fellow of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory. The author of Provincializing Europe and many other works, he is a founding editor of the series Subaltern Studies, a co-editor of Critical Inquiry, and a founding editor of Postcolonial Studies. He will be in residence at the Institute for Advanced Study from October 15 to 26.
