The Platform of Joy: Krishna Das, Sharon Salzberg & Dr. Mark Epstein Saturday, January 17, 2009

Within longing lies a joy accessible to all. It is who we are, our natural state, behind addiction, beneath rage and under confusion. Uncovered by the Buddha during a period of self-investigation preceding his enlightenment, this joy became the wellspring of his psychology and the foundation of what he called the Middle Path. In more recent times, it has been rediscovered by some of the more thoughtful psychoanalytic practitioners of our own culture, as well as other followers of the Dharma. This afternoon's gathering, bringing together three Western teachers who have been touched by the ancient Wisdom traditions of South Asia, will explore this platform of joy, what makes it available and unavailable, and how it can contribute to our psychological health. Meditation and kirtan will provide some relief from the discussion (or vice versa).

Sharon Salzberg is cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts. She is one of America's leading meditation teachers and authors, and has been a student of Buddhism since 1971, guiding meditation retreats worldwide since 1974. Sharon's latest book is The Kindness Handbook, published by Sounds True. She is also the author of The Force of Kindness, published by Sounds True; Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience, published by Riverhead Books; and Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness, published by Shambhala Publications. Read more: Dr. Mark Epstein is a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City who lectures frequently about the value of Buddhist meditation for psychotherapy. His previous books include Thoughts Without a Thinker, Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart, and Going on Being. He is a contributing editor to Tricycle: The Buddhist Review and has written many articles for Yoga Journal and O: The Oprah Magazine.

Books Open to Desire - One of my favorite stories comes from the Sufi tradition of mystical Islam. It is a tale that tells us exactly what we will have to face if we endeavor to walk the path of desire.

Going On Being; Buddhism and the Way of Change - Mark Epstein combines a memoir of his own journey as a student of Buddhism and psychology with a powerful message about how cultivating true self-awareness and adopting a Buddhist understanding of change can free the mind.

Going to Pieces without Falling Apart - For decades, Western psychology has promised fulfillment through building and strengthening the ego. We are taught that the ideal is a strong, individuated self, constructed and reinforced over a lifetime.

Introduction : Part 1
Going to Pieces without Falling Apart
By Mark Epstein, M.D.
For decades, Western psychology has promised fulfillment through building and strengthening the ego. We are taught that the ideal is a strong, individuated self, constructed and reinforced over a lifetime. But Buddhist psychiatrist Mark Epstein has found a different way.

Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart shows us that happiness doesn't come from any kind of acquisitiveness, be it material or psychological. Happiness comes from letting go. Weaving together the accumulated wisdom of his two worlds - Buddhism and Western psychotherapy - Epstein shows how "the happiness that we seek depends on our ability to balance the ego's need to do with our inherent capacity to be." He encourages us to relax the ever-vigilant mind in order to experience the freedom that comes only from relinquishing control. more:

Meditation practice opens us up to the world, and allows us to realize fully what we are feeling as we encounter both suffering and joy. The Buddha taught the doctrine of the “Middle Way,” a path that avoids extremes and remains centered in the reality of the present moment. http://www.sharonsalzberg.com/sharon/meditations/meditations.htm
