"The New UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities": Presentation by Arlene Kanter November 5, 2008

Over eighty countries have now signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Arlene S. Kanter will discuss the history leading up to the Convention, its key provisions, its importance to the disability rights movement worldwide, and problems that remain for children and adults with disabilities under international and domestic disability laws.

Arlene S. Kanter is the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Law, Director of the Disability Law and Policy Program, and Co-Director of the Center on Human Policy, Law and Disability Studies at Syracuse University. She is an internationally recognized expert in disability law and policy. Co-director of the first university-based multidisciplinary center focusing on disability research, advocacy, policy development, and public education, Kanter established the nation's first joint degree program in law and disability studies in 2003. Coauthor of Cases and Materials on International Human Rights and Comparative Mental Disability Law, she has worked with the United Nations on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
