Corner of Church and Market Streets
Parramatta, New South Wales 2150

Directed by Shyam Benegal and written by Fatima Meer, The Making of the Mahatma is the tale of a different, unknown Gandhi before he became the Mahatma, and is screening on Monday 1 October at Riverside Theatres as part of the Screen Café series.

A painfully shy young man struggling to formulate his ideas, this is the story of the man before he became the Mahatma. This film about Gandhi's experiments with truth and nonviolence in colonial South Africa documents Gandhi's 21 years in South Africa, from age 19, and the changes which came over the anglicised, London-trained barrister as he encountered racial discrimination and bias firsthand. The Making of the Mahatma takes us all on the journey through the life and times of a Gandhi we might not all know, until now.

Screen Café is a series of monthly film screenings at Riverside Theatres which brings film enthusiasts and filmmakers together to watch, learn, discuss and network in a candid, interactive and inclusive atmosphere.
