The book, Speaking for Myself: An Anthology of Asian Women's Writing, was released by filmmaker Mrinal Sen at a glittering ceremony in Kolkata on Sunday evening. Edited by eminent scholars Sukriti Paul Kumar and Malashri Lal, it has works (written in and translated to English) by women writers from 34 Asian countries.

The book also has a foreword by academician and author Kapila Vatsyayan, whose advice and guidance were crucial in giving shape to it.

"The book explores Asian cultural linkages. All the countries represented in it had close cultural ties in the past, but our modern world and its borders have driven them apart. So, what happened to the women? This is what the book looks at. It is about the creative mind of Asian women," said Lal.

She also made a distinction between Asian women and their western counterparts. "The women in the book don't believe in banging the door and walking out they are not the Ibsen model of women." What they show instead are a secret, inner strength and an ability to endure. "These women don't suffer from self-pity. They cope with life and make it beautiful," said Paul Kumar.
