Actress Laura Sheppard brings the world of Gertrude Stein to life in a one-woman show based on the new memoir by Harriet Levy, Paris Portraits: Stories of Picasso, Matisse, Gertrude Stein and their Circle. In 1907, Levy, a celebrated San Francisco writer and theater critic, moved to Paris with her friend Alice B. Toklas and suddenly found herself immersed in a vibrant world of artists, salons and wild nights in Montmartre.
The dramatic 30-minute performance directed and designed by Suzanne Stassevitch is followed by a conversation with Fred Rosenbaum, Founding Director of Lehrhaus Judaica, and Frances Dinkeslspiel, author of Towers of Gold: How One Jewish Immigrant Named Isaias Hellman Created California.
Laura Sheppard has extensive experience in experimental theater, running her own company, Gestural Theatre, in Boston for many years. Her solo show, Still Life with Stein, based on the writings of Gertrude Stein, toured to festivals in the US and Europe.
Presented in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibition Seeing Gertrude Stein: Five Stories.
