THE HONOLULU JAZZ QUARTET CELEBRATES ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A PERFORMANCE AND NEW CD AT GORDON BIERSCH, JULY 20, 2011

“It seems like just yesterday that, in July of 2001, Hawaii’s preeminent jazz quartet was born. Yet the achievements and landmark events within that decade are enough to fill a lifelong career,” writes Robert Pennybacker, from the liner notes of the HJQ’s new recording Honolulu Jazz Quartet – Remembrance / Liv...e at the Triple Door.

Over the years, the group (including John Kolivas/bass, Dan Del Negro/piano, Tim Tsukiyama/sax, and Von Baron/drums) has garnered a loyal fan base through performances at local venues such as Studio 6 (Musician’s union), Kapono’s, Gordon Biersch, Brew Moon, and Sarento’s; its three previous recordings, Remembrance (2001), Sounds of the City (2004), Tenacity (2007); performances at the Hawaii International Jazz Festival; playing their original compositions at the Blaisdell Concert Hall with the Honolulu Symphony Pops; and a successful West Coast tour in 2007.’

One of the HJQ’s greatest accomplishments was being recognized and honored by the world’s most famous, and respected, jazz critic--Nat Hentoff. Hentoff, who wrote the liner notes for Tenacity, stated, “The Honolulu Jazz Quartet....is ready to be recognized in jazz scenes throughout the world, as is manifestly, invigoratingly evident in Sounds of the City and now Tenacity.”

HJQ’s 10th Anniversary performance will be at Gordon Biersch, Aloha Tower Marketplace, on July 20, 2011 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. “How many music groups, of any genre, actually stay together for 10 years? We just had to celebrate this and it is fitting to release a new recording for our loyal fans,” says John Kolivas, the group’s founder and leader. The album is made up of a live performance from Seattle’s Triple Door music club, which was one of the venues the HJQ played at on their 2007 West Coast tour.

The CD also includes the title track, Remembrance, recorded in 2001, which was written by Kolivas with lyrics by Robert Pennybacker. “Anita Hall’s haunting rendition of Remembrance remains true to the song’s original intent—an homage to those who lost their lives on September 11th. But with the passage of a decade since 9-11 and the birth of the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, the song also takes on a broader meaning – a heartfelt remembrance of and appreciation for all things past,” writes Pennybacker.

At the performance, the HJQ will also debut new compositions that will help lead the group into the next decade!
