Sun, Oct 24 @ 2PM THE HAUNTING In a variation on the age-old premise so ably satirized in last week's film, Robert Wise (renowned director of such diverse classics as West Side Story, The Sound of Music, The Set-Up, and The Day The Earth Stood Still) provides us with an exer- cise in true terror. This time, a diverse group (Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Russ Tamblyn and Richard Johnson) comes to a haunted New England mansion to research the paranormal. But once inside they, and we, are immersed in a world of heart-quickening fear. Wise, who started out as an editor and director for Val Lewton (on The Body Snatcher and Curse of The Cat People), learned well the value of building dread and horror through atmosphere and shock-inducing timing. Based on Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House, this chilling exercise in invisible terror is often considered to be the ultimate haunted house movie. See it and find out why - if you dare! (Bill Roth) Robert Wise, US, 1963, NR, 113 min.
