255 Route 70
Toms River, New Jersey 08755

People in the United States today are too young to know that October 8th is a day of remembrance, referring to a catastrophic event that rocked America back in 1871. During the days of October 8, 9, and 10 of that year, all attention became focused on the calamity that is known as the Great Chicago fire great because of the dramatic nature and extent of the devastation. The fire, fueled by a gale-force wind and the wooden construction of most buildings of the era, killed over 300 people, leveled 4 miles of the city, consumed about 17,500 buildings, resulted in the loss of $192 million in property damage, left about 100,000 people homeless and sparked the urban-legend about Mrs. O'Leary and her famous cow.

Every year, firefighters throughout the U.S. observe the second week of October as Fire Prevention Week, and the entire month is proclaimed as National Fire Prevention Month.

Volunteer personnel from the Toms River engine companies will visit The Goddard School on Route 70 (just 1/8 mile west of Whitesville Road) on Wednesday, October 3rd, at 10 AM, in memory of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. This annual visit intends to engage Ms. Dana Chibbaro (CQ) and her pre-school students in fire-safety lessons and activities. Of course, the firefighters also bring along their classic BIG, RED TRUCK and fire-fighting apparatus to highlight the event.

"Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. This month we are happy to address the issues of fire prevention and fire safety with our families. Parents should set up a fire escape-plan and practice that plan with their children," advises Ms. Dana, the owner/operator of The Goddard School.

For additional information on the National Fire Protection Association's "Practice Your Escape Plan," parents and the general public can visit http://www.nfpa.org/

The Goddard School is a privately owned, licensed preschool, offering early education, childhood development and Kindergarten services in a *fun-learning* environment. A full curriculum is taught Mondays through Fridays, from 7 AM to 6 PM, by an experienced teaching staff. The school operates a year-round program for children from 6-weeks to 6-years of age -- and a summer-camp program that serves children through 8-years of age. The Goddard School serves families who live and work in the Toms River, Brick, Manchester, Lakewood, Jackson, and Lakehurst areas.

Parents and their children are always welcome at The Goddard School. To schedule a meeting and tour, obtain more information, or just make inquiries, contact Ms. Dana Chibbaro at (732)363-5530, or visit The Goddard School on the internet at:
