A tribute to Komitas, the founder of Armenian classical music

During the turmoil of the turn of the 20th century, Komitas's music unified a nation that endured decades of tragedy and devastation. This month's concert features Komitas' most revered Armenian folk melodies, including Gaaroon Aa, Shogher Djaan, Kaakaveek, Haabrbaan, Cheenaar Es and Keler-Tsoler, as well as others arranged by Sarkis Aslamazian for string quartet. Sarkis Aslamazian's arrangements boast a widespread reputation both in Armenia and beyond Armenian borders. His compositional proficiency and delicate musical taste shine in arrangements based on Komitas's works originally composed for chorus and solo voice.

David Cheng, violin
Michael Okun, violin

About Last Friday at Pro Arts
In 2006 a partnership was formed between the Pro Arts Gallery and Bay Area Classical Harmonies (BACH). They each felt it was important to cross artistic genres and expose their patrons to a unique experience where several senses were engaged at a time. Thus, the Last Friday of the Month Concert series was created. BACH, a non-profit organization, has been dedicated to the presentation of fine classical music in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and is now expanding into presenting world music.
