The Dark Room: Photographic Imagination in New Painting December 5, 2008

In the painter’s dark room, something is emerging, new formations, new combinations, new mutations…It is the new alchemy, the explosive new meeting of painting and photography.

The exhibition seeks to present the work of a group of young painters who are incorporating photography in their painting practices in newer, dynamic ways. Trudging away from the common and fashionable genre of photo-realistic works, these painters embody fresh approaches to merging photography in painting: by creating photo-imaginary works rather than the photo-real. Rather than painting echoing the photographic, here painting plays with the photographic. Photographic source material and / or processes are transformed in painting practices and the richness and symbiosis of mediums creates this new form of contemporary painting, the photo-imaginary.
