Since the book is about some terrible experiences, when I first heard Color Purple was going to be a musical, I wondered if the producers were crazy. After seeing the show, I realize they and the playwright, composer, and choreographer were geniuses. I teach drama and dance, so I've both seen and been in many shows. Rarely has one touched me the way this did. Both my date and I were misty-eyed by intermission, and I was afraid I was going to break down by the curtain call. This was an amazing theatrical experience - do NOT miss it if it returns, even if you're not an avid theater-goer. This is the real deal, folks, whether you're white or African-American. (I'm white.) Great book, songs, dancing, talent, feelings . . . It's American theater at its best.
