The Bach Choir's tradition of giving JS Bach's St Matthew Passion annually in English dates back to 1930 and was begun by Sir Adrian Boult, one of the Choir's distinguished musical directors.

The Bach Choir is joined by the outstanding period instrument ensemble, Florilegium, and a distinguished array of soloists, including tenor, Christopher Gillett. 'Christopher Gillett's dramatic but sincere interpretation of the Evangelist was utterly riveting' wrote the Evening Standard of a previous performance of the St Matthew Passion with The Bach Choir. And of the Choir: 'The Bach Choir itself remains a marvel, its utmost precision conveying utmost concentration.'
