Although he originally rose to prominence in the shadow of Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard was one of the first "Young Lions" to develop his own sound, mixing in elements of Freddie Hubbard and Marsalis. . He is known for his african-fusion style of playing which makes him unique from other trumpet players from his generation such as Wynton Marsalis. Having worked with some of the legends of the genre, he rose to prominence through his association with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1982-1986. He was also the co-leader of a group with Donald Harrison for many years. He has written the soundtracks of several Spike Lee films and appears in Lee's 2006 Hurricane Katrina documentary, When the Levees Broke for which he also wrote the original score. His newest CD, scheduled for release in August, is a rearrangement of his score to the Spike Lee documentary "When the Levees Broke" using Orchestra and the quintet. The CD also features 4 original tracks written by the band to go with the theme. For the performances at Yoshi’s, Terence will be joined by Brice Winston on saxophone, Fabian Almazan on piano, bassist Derrick Hodge and Kendrick Scott on drums.
