Market Street Gallery is very proud to announce tao of metal; a solo exhibition by local Bay Area artist, Feng Jin, a collection of sculptures inspired by cursive and Chinese calligraphy. "The Tao of Metal" is Feng Jin's alternative way to express Chinese calligraphy -- no longer giving viewers the impression of "ink on paper", he expresses it sculpturally giving it another dimension. The exhibit will open January 8, 2013, and run through February 28, 2013. The artist reception will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013, from 6 PM - 8 PM.

In his own words; artist statement by Feng Jin:

"Born in China with Korean descent, I have lived in the conflict of two Asian cultures ever since being a child. Coming to the US and staying here for 17 years continues the similar journey of such a confliction. Seeking the Tao of art in the U.S for almost two decades, I found that my artistic style is turning back to my origin more and more now. I enjoy observed the world through out experiencing of conflict and stimulation in between Eastern and Western societies as well as adopting what I have learned into my art creation.

My work reflects the re-evaluation of both American and Chinese cultures. Using used door as a background to represent tradition and conservatism; twisted calligraphy-like characters to represent language and communication. When we knock on the door of tradition, do we have a chance to open up to a new modern world? When we put tradition and modern together, do we receive the result of gain or loss? How do we fit in and balance such a conflict and turn our life much better and fulfill?

I do not have any answer yet. It is just my question."
