When Amy Beach composed her Gaelic Symphony in 1894, she believed she had embarked on a "first" for women. However, at that time several European composers had already accomplished that step. WSRC scholar, Liane Curtis, will lead a discussion and listening session of recorded musical examples composed by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Louise Farrenc, Augusta Holmès, and Beach will be heard and discussed.
The Women's Studies Research Center (WSRC) at Brandeis University will host 11 lectures this semester featuring the works from various WSRC scholars. Lectures are held at 12:30 p.m. in the Women's Studies Research Center, Epstein Building, 515 South St., Waltham, Mass, unless otherwise noted. Admission is free. For more information, call (781) 736-8100.
