Speaker Bios:
Dr. Alan Baratz, Chairman of the Board, UPEK
Dr. Alan Baratz is Chairman of the Board of UPEK. Baratz has held leadership positions at established industry leaders, information technology startups, and private equity firms, and became widely known in his capacity as the first president of the Software Products and Platforms (JavaSoft) division at Sun Microsystems.

Baratz most recently served as senior vice president of the Network Software and Systems Technology Group at Cisco, where he led software strategy, innovation, development, and delivery. As the first president of the Software Products and Platforms (JavaSoft) division at Sun Microsystems, he led the growth and adoption of the Java platform from its infancy to a robust platform supporting mission-critical applications in nearly 80 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies. Baratz also held executive positions at IBM; was CEO and president of Versata, Inc., Zaplet Inc., and NeoPath Networks; and, served as managing director at E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co.

Baratz holds a doctorate and a master's degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of California Los Angeles.

Nicolas El Baze, Partner, Partech International
Nicolas joined Partech International in 2000.
Prior to Partech, Nicolas spent 15 years as an entrepreneur and was a co-founder of several venture-funded companies including Softway International (acq. by ITway), Softway Systems (acq. by Microsoft), and ISDnet (acq. by Cable & Wireless). Nicolas also lead the Softway Venture Development activity which resulted in the incubation of several successful start-ups in the U.S. and Europe including: RightPoint (acq. by E.piphany), MultiMania (IPO - acq. by Lycos Europe), and LibertySurf (IPO - acq. by Tiscali). At Partech, Nicolas’ investments include Meiosys (acq. by IBM), Akimbi (acq. by VMware), Pantero (acq. by Progress Software), ClearApp (acq. by Oracle), Q-Layer (acq. by Sun Microsystems), RockYou, and Replay Solutions.

Nicolas received an MBA from Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) in Paris, France and attended the International Management Program at both UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and Universität zu Köln, Germany.
