Once an investor has taken a shine to your company's potential, defining how much the company is worth is an inevitable challenge for both investor and startup founder. So how does it work? What are the steps in determining the value of an early-stage company?

Many startup founders are uneducated on this critical point, and will quote to investors, a indefensible number. Our seasoned speakers will discuss tips and techniques used in the venture community.

The Panel:

Dave Hills - KPG Ventures
Jeff Karras - Levensohn Venture Partners
Dave Hills is a General Partner with KPG Ventures. Prior to KPG, Dave was President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of LookSmart, Ltd, (NASD - LOOK), where he rebuilt the company’s ad network, quadrupled audience to LookSmart sites and licensed the company’s ad center to sites such as ask.com.

A media veteran, Dave has more than 28 years in the industry, including 14 years in online media. His extensive experience in online advertising, search marketing, audience and technology development, and subscription services provides him with a relevant, useful perspective and practical experience in all strategic and operational areas.

Previously, Dave served as President of Media Solutions for 24/7 Real Media, overseeing its domestic media, search and technology units. Before 24/7 Real Media, Dave was Chief Operating Officer and President of Sales for About, Inc., which owned About.com and the pay-per-click service, Sprinks.

Additionally, Dave has held various media executive positions for subsidiaries of Cox Enterprises, including Vice President of Sales for Cox Interactive Media, which owns and operates a network of local content Web sites; Vice President and Director of Cox Interactive Sales, which operated an Internet advertising network; and Vice President for Telerep, a television advertising sales representation firm and a division of Cox Broadcasting.

Dave holds an M.S. in communications from Boston University and a B.A. in communications from Bethany College. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cake Financial, SezWho, Singlefeed and Sportgenic (formerly Active Athlete Media).

Jeff Karras joined Levensohn Venture Partners in January 2001 and specializes in digital media and demand-side cleantech technologies. Before joining LVP, Jeff was a Group Product Marketing Manager at Sun Microsystems, where he was a key strategic driver behind their Portal Server product line. Prior to Sun Microsystems, Jeff was a Principal Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers' Strategic Change Group, where he provided strategic guidance across a variety of industries including telecommunications, software, energy and financial services.

In the past, Jeff has worked closely with a number of LVP portfolio companies including Atheros, Veraz Networks, Covigo, Rapt, and Reconnex. Currently, Jeff is a board observer at ShotSpotter and holds board seats at Plum and Sim Ops Studios. In addition, Jeff is an active member of the Board of Trustees for Astia.

Jeff received a BS in Commerce from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
