Matrix Partners
Since its inception in 1977, Matrix Partners has been dedicated to helping outstanding entrepreneurs build successful companies. Our mission is helping our founders and management teams build the next great companies of tomorrow and often entire new industries. We bring the collective resources of the Partnership to each investment, giving you, the entrepreneur, access to all of our experience. Our approach sets us apart from most other venture firms and is the reason why so many of our successful entrepreneurs, when starting their next company, return to Matrix first. This approach has propelled Matrix Partners to be the most successful venture firm in the United States during the last ten years with its last three partnerships having record- setting returns.

We emphasize quality, rather than quantity, in making investment decisions. We maintain a high ratio of partners to capital deployed, allowing us to devote the necessary amount of partnership resources to each investment. Therefore, we do not spread our time and capital across less important relationships just to "put more money to work". We are unique in that we always serve on the boards of our portfolio companies. We prefer to bet on ourselves and the teams we back, rather than on other venture firms.

We have built a diverse experience base among the general partners of Matrix to achieve a unique combination of significant operating and industry talent. We have worked successfully together for many years, differentiating us from many partnerships that were formed hastily to invest in the Internet.

We have the ability to guide our companies through the challenges of each stage of the life cycle, since we have vast experience with all aspects of the growth process. It is our goal to support and help you build your company into a leader in its market - not to operate your company. We have an exceedingly large network of contacts to help you recruit industry leaders to the board of directors and to help you recruit your team - from the core engineering team to senior management. Furthermore, we offer strategic and operating guidance and advice on the most appropriate financing strategies. In blending our unique skills with your talent and vision, it is our commitment to ensure that you achieve the optimum level of success.

Our investment strategy is to invest in companies that we perceive to be on the cutting edge of creating major new markets in software, communications equipment, semiconductors, storage, Internet and wireless.

We have a presence in the two major technology centers of the United States - Boston and Silicon Valley. These locations give us the advantage to compare trends and analyze competition to supply you with the "big picture" of market potential. Our bi-coastal presence also gives us the ability to extend our network to capture talent throughout the country. We also have developed a broad list of industry contacts in both areas that can be very helpful in assessing a new idea or "opening doors" once your company is up and running.

We approach each investment with a long-term commitment, since our goal is to build successful, independent companies - not acquisition targets. Matrix invests $10+ million over multiple rounds, with an initial investment ranging from seed amounts of $100,000-$300,000 to early-stage rounds of up to $10 million.

Shirish Sathaye
Shirish Sathaye, based in our Silicon Valley office has over 5 years of experience in the venture industry, investing in early-stage information technology companies. Prior to a venture career, Shirish had over 15 years operating experience in IT companies, both as an entrepreneur and as an executive.

Shirish currently serves on the board of Aruba Networks, Grandis, Rohati Systems and Solidcore Systems.

Before joining Matrix, he was the VP of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer at Alteon WebSystems, where he led the engineering organization almost from its inception through a highly successful IPO and subsequent acquisition by Nortel Networks. Prior to Alteon, Shirish was at FORE Systems, where he led the development of all of FORE's award-winning ATM switch products. Before FORE, Shirish spent eight years at Digital Equipment Corporation, where he worked on Internet routing protocols, Ethernet, FDDI, and ATM network technologies.
