American Composers Orchestra presents the innovative and genre-defying composer and percussionist Susie Ibarra as part of their Composers OutFront! series. The program includes Barangay (Neighborhood) Rhythms: 3 compositions by Ibarra inspired by a mixture of musical traditions and rhythmic concepts: Filipino, Spanish, Chinese and Thai; Dancesteps, a solo piano piece performed by Jade Simmons and inspired by the dance and rhythmic traditions of Filipino gong music; Black and White, a work-in-progress for solo violin and samples performed by Mari Kimura, which is excerpted from a dance/operatic work, Golden Phoenix, in collaboration with poet/librettist Wang Ping; The Ancients, a composition arranged in this setting for woodwind and string quartet and percussion featuring Joseph Trent, Gilad Harel, Mari Kimura, Tomas Ulrich, Roberto Rodriguez, Jade Simmons and Susie Ibarra; and Electric Kulintang, in which Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez create acoustic and electronic soundscapes from from their upcoming release The Dialects, weaving melodies and rhythms that evoke Filipino folkloric trances in an excerpt of new pieces titled 7000 Mysteries.
