Shes been called a four-foot-ten singer-songwriter with a six-foot voice. Richmond resident Susan Greenbaum and her band return to the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street, on Saturday, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. for a concert of original music as well as a special tribute to the music of Carole King. Tickets for this Dewey Decibel Concert Series performance are $15 for adults, $13 for Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library and students w/ ID and $7 for those under 16. Tickets can be reserved by calling (757) 259-4070.
Susan has been singing as long as she's been talking -- in choirs, jazz groups and as a solo act. Music, a fundamental in Susans Kansas City childhood, continued to provide focus for her extracurricular life as a student at Harvard, and in the years following while she was an executive for Fortune 500 companies. Though singing always came naturally to Susan, songwriting was a more intimidating process -- she did not write her first real song until 1993.
With that obstacle behind her, she committed the cardinal sin for a musician -- she quit her day job. Trading her power suits for performing has paid off. Whether in solo concert or with her band, Susan draws enthusiastic audiences who delight in her lively, diverse and powerful performances in places like The Bottom Line in New York City, The Birchmere in Northern Virginia and Annapolis Rams Head Tavern. Recently, industry professionals and over 100,000 Internet voters chose Susan in a national competition to be the opening act for international superstar Jewel. Susan has also performed with the Dave Matthews Band, Kenny Loggins, Janis Ian, Tuck and Patti, and Catie Curtis.
Susans pop music sensibilities merge with clever wordplay to create songs that people "get." Her songs entertain in their humor, candor and emotion. Melody is partnered with clarity in Susan's tunes, and her voice sings the stories with genuine energy and power. She uses intensity and strength to tell her truths, in styles ranging from infectious pop/rock and sexy funk to swinging jazz and folk with a country tinge. Susans Williamsburg concert will include her original compositions as well as a complete cover of the dozen songs on Carole Kings 1971 multi-Grammy winning album, Tapestry.
