Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg (editor of Yentl's Revenge: The Next Wave of Jewish Feminism) reads from her new book, Surprised By God: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Religion (Beacon Press). The book is part memoir, part cultural criticism, about the personal and political implications of taking on a religious discipline. It's about how going deep into spiritual practice can cause people to as all sorts of hard questions about their lives, their relationships, their ideas of fun and their politics--but in a good way. It's also about how, in some ways, contemporary American culture makes this process harder than it's ever been, and, as such, maybe more important than ever. (It's also about punk rock, glitter, and dot-com era San Francisco.) This will be a lively talk, reading and discussion, and is free and open to the public.
