Riverside Theatres presents
Sunwrae Ensemble
Saturday 2nd May at 7:30pm
One performance only

As part of the Big Notes Music Series, Riverside Theatre is presenting Sunwrae Ensemble in Autumn Never Fall.

The Sunwrae Ensembles Autumn Never Fall offers stunning cinematic music, performed by a nine-piece chamber group. The concert is a rare treat and the passages of improvisation throughout give the performances an immediacy and vibrancy rarely experienced in a classical recital.

“Our performance will feature new works form the album Autumn Never Fall and selected pieces from our previous album Eavesdropping” says Artistic Director, Rae Howell. “And we will be accompanied by live projections and short animation film, The Machine”.

Sunwrae Ensemble is a unique company as it harnesses the skills and extraordinary technique of classically trained players. The ensemble is made up of a grand piano, vibraphone, string quartet, harp, alto flute, double bass and percussion.

The dynamic nature of the performance is captured in the luminous and highly accessible contemporary compositions of Artistic Director Rae Howell. Howell composed the pieces performed and interpreted by the 9 piece ensemble and wrote the accompanying animation film The Machine.

The animation film The Machine, with illustrations by Tom Fraser, is a beautifully produced story, written by Howell. The music for The Machine was composed to emulate the ‘city’ as a machine, built through repetitive motives, layered in a minimalist fashion, encapsulating all the people that work in the city, who make up the nuts and bolts of the machine, which churns day in, day out.

The ensemble has been described as “animated and energetic...” (Thomas Reiner, Music Forum 2007) and “hypnotically beautiful with a flowing cinematic feel...” (Jessica Nicholas, The Age 2006).

Sunwrae Ensemble play Riverside Theatres on May 2 and the Basement on May 13
