Los Angeles based artist, Nick McPhail, installing the gallery with urban landscapes ... McPhail's paintings tend to be a documentation of man’s relationship with the natural landscape; specifically that of his immediate surroundings. He is interested in how nature creeps into what man has created, and conversely how man has imposed upon and reshaped the natural environment …. a hillside that has been reformed to facilitate an expressway a river that is forced to follow its concrete guidelines … a dilapidated retaining wall fractured by an expanding root system. While these paintings don’t necessarily have people in them, the human presence is quite evident. McPhail’s work is a meditation on the city, as well as a study on color, line, composition, and material. Working from photographs, he is able to deconstruct his subject matter and break the image down to the bare bones of composition. He is then free to reconstruct the image and project his own perceptions, formally and conceptually. He has found that relationships between space, line, color and texture are more expressive than any image of passion or action ever could be.
