Long before there were written records, storytellers filled a vital function – they were society’s major source of information, instruction, and history. In today’s whirl of mass media, the role of the storyteller has been diminished, but those who tell stories – and the stories themselves – remain an important part of societies throughout the world. Not only do stories teach, they heal. They make us think and feel. Stories bring laughter and tears and can reveal more about ourselves than we knew before.
This course presents seven professional storytellers from a rich variety of cultures who will demonstrate key identifying elements of their culture, illustrating what sets it apart as well as common threads that link people from all cultures with their neighbors.
Seven Mondays, Feb 19-April 16. Class details, storyteller profiles, registration and fee information available at Rice GSCS website.
