Overview

This is an indepth course which allows 6 people to enhance their camera skills to include 3D. You will get hands on Experience shooting 3D and watching it back to learn from the process. With expert support and equipment from Can Communicate you can quickly make 3D another part of your professional skills.

Why 3D?

The concept of filming in 3D has been around since the 1890's. 3D has come in and out of fashion over the years, but technology was never really able to do it justice. Now with digital cameras and projectors, the technology has caught up with 3D. The financial success of 3D films such as Avatar, Up, The Final Destination, and Coraline means that 3D is here to stay.

Panasonic are releasing a 3D video camera, Sony and JVC already produce 3D televisions for viewing 3D in the home. A 3D Blu-Ray standard has been created so films like Avatar can be released on 3D Blu-Ray discs for home viewing.

Course Content

-Brief history of 3D

-Good 3D Vs Bad 3D - What is good 3D and Bad 3D? and is "Bad 3D" always wrong?

-Science if 3D film making - Why we use two cameras, the difference between side by side rigs and mirror rigs and the difference between shooting with convergence and shooting in parallel. How elements such as focal length and screen size alter the 3D effect.

-What does a Stereographer do? - How do they fit with the rest of the crew? How the role is different on a drama than on a live broadcast.

-Technical Details - Why we need to genlock the cameras, how we match the time code on the cameras, what equipment we have for lining up and monitoring in 3D.

-Practical Interior - We shoot some interior shots with a mirror rig and then the same shots with a side by side rig. The students set up the rigs and line up the 3D using a small on set monitor. We play back the footage on the large screen and compare the effect from the different rigs.

-Practical Exterior - We shoot some exterior shots with a mirror rig and with a new mini side by side rig. The students set up the rigs and line up the 3D using a small on set monitor. We play back the footage on the large screen and compare the effect from the different rigs.

-Future of 3D - Why 3D won't be a specialist subject for very long, soon every cameraman will need to know how to shoot in 3D.
