Stellastarr*'s 2003 self-titled debut fed on a steady diet of The Church, Echo And The Bunnymen, Big Country, and The Cure, with brooding vocals that made Interpol sound unaffected by comparison. The New York group took a much-needed break after some relentless touring, but when it reconvened late last year to record its next record, the quartet decided to shift course and ditch all the songs it had written on the road. The resulting album, the recently released Harmonies For The Haunted, takes a more focused, song-oriented approach. Opening the show will be young Londoner Tom Vek, whose strange and beautiful homemade music expertly mixes electronic and rock elements. His debut full-length, We Have Sound, recorded mostly in his parents' garage, will be released next month. Following their show at The Warfield, members of Bloc Party will show up to DJ between and after the live performances. (Bloc Party will also perform at 8 p.m. at The Warfield; Stellastarr* will also perform Sept. 23 at The Independent.)
