St. Martin’s Chamber Choir: The Unknown Masterpiece November 8, 2009

Why do some composers achieve enduring fame, while others fade to often undeserved obscurity? The audience for this November Cameo concert considers this question as an ensemble of 12 St. Martin’s singers presents two “unknown masterpieces”, the Missa Praeperata Corda by Italian Renaissance composer Stefano Bernardi, and Mass in A minor by Romantic-era Czech composer Jan Václav Kalivoda.

St. Martin’s Chamber Choir is an independent professional choral ensemble based in Denver, Colorado. The 24-voice group, founded in 1994 by Artistic Director Timothy J. Krueger, is known for its imaginative, scholarly programming and superb choral blend. The choir does not have any religious affiliation, having taken its name from the site of its first performance, St. Martin’s Chapel at Denver’s St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. To date St. Martin’s has released ten acclaimed recordings, and is heard on classical radio stations around the United States.

Cameo concerts are audience-interactive performances presented in intimate or unusual venues. They usually last about one hour, and are less expensive than full-length St. Martin’s concerts. Usually featuring a smaller ensemble from the choir (8-12 singers), Cameo concerts offer listeners a rare opportunity to interact with the conductor and performers in an always lively discussion about the works being performed.
