Michael Armstrong from the City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development will review Portland's past and current efforts to reduce fossil-fuel use and carbon emissions and describe upcoming initiatives. In 1993, Portland became the first city in the U.S. to adopt a climate-protection plan. In the years since, Portland has implemented significant policies and programs and seen promising results, with local carbon emissions now at 1990 levels. At the same time, there's much more we need to do, and large challenges lie ahead.

This discussion will review achievements, challenges, and opportunities for Portland around transportation, buildings, energy, and solid waste as the community responds to peak oil and climate change.
