Artist Talk: 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Opening Reception: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: Southern Exposure, 2901 Mission Street @ 25th Street

Southern Exposure inaugurates our new Mission Street storefront
space with the first of monthly receptions launching SoEx Off-Site.
SoEx Off-Site is a yearlong series of public art projects
investigating diverse strategies for exploring and mapping public
space.

At the opening, join Rebar with Snap Out of It (SOOI) for an
introduction to COMMONspace, an exploration of San Francisco's
privately owned public open spaces (POPOS). Utilizing these POPOS as a laboratory for understanding the nature of the modern commons, COMMONspace remixes behaviors, situations and spaces.
Using the Planning Department's map describing the location of 14 unique sites in South of Market and Downtown San Francisco, COMMONspace investigates these spaces in terms of accessibility, surveillance,
and other explicit rules. Rebar and SOOI activate these public spacesn through a series of paraformances: performance actions that test each site's implicit social codes and engage public participants.
Paraformances begin as playful actions by single individuals and
culminate in full-scale, 'flash-mob' style occupations that
increasingly engage the attention and participation of accidental
audiences.
